When a rug should be out of the house

Dust, paint and movers are hard on a rug

A renovation fills a house with fine dust that works into the pile and the foundation, and the crew walking through does not take its boots off for a rug. A move is worse: the rug gets rolled around a lamp, stood on end in a truck and left in the garage of the new house for a month. Either way, a rug that was fine in September is a tired rug by spring.

The simple fix is to take the rug out before any of that starts. We pick it up, wash it so it is not stored with a season of soil in it, dry it through, wrap it, and keep it until the floors are finished or the boxes are unpacked. Then it comes back clean and goes down on a finished floor.

Why it is washed first

A rug is never stored dirty

Everything that goes wrong with a stored rug starts with what was in it when it was rolled. Soil in wool feeds moth larvae, which do their eating in the dark of a roll. A damp spot in a wrapped rug has nowhere to dry and turns to mildew. Pet salts in the foundation keep working, and the smell is stronger when the rug comes out than when it went in. So every rug we store is washed and dried through first. It goes into the wrap with nothing in it to feed on, nothing to rot and nothing to smell, which is the whole reason it comes out the way it went in.

The technician reads the fiber, tests the dye, measures the rug and writes the wash down. The storage terms go on the same paper: what it costs, how long you expect to need it, and how to reach us when you want it back.

The wash

The usual full treatment: dusted dry, washed the way its fiber needs, rinsed, and dried completely. A repair or a pet treatment can be done on the same trip before the rug is wrapped.

Rolled and wrapped

The clean, dry rug is rolled and wrapped for storage so dust and light stay off it.

Kept until you call

The rug stays at our facility. When the floors are done or the move is over, call or text and we schedule the delivery.

Delivered and unrolled

The rug comes back and is unrolled where you want it, at either address. You look it over, and the paperwork you agreed to is the bill.

The terms, in writing

Nothing about storage is left to memory

Before the rug leaves your house, you have a sheet that says what the wash costs, what storage costs, roughly how long you expect to need it, and how to reach us when you are ready. If the contractor runs late, you call or text and the sheet is updated. If you need the rug sooner, same thing. There is no fine print to discover at delivery; the terms you agreed to are the terms you pay.

Moving without storing

Not every move needs storage. Some people want the rugs washed and wrapped and riding with the furniture, so they go down clean in the new house on day one. The rug is picked up, washed, dried through, rolled and wrapped, and delivered back before the movers arrive. Tell us the moving date when you book so the wash can be planned around it. If the new house is anywhere we serve, we can also hold the rug and deliver it straight there after the truck has gone, which spares it the ride altogether.

Say that the rug is going into storage or being wrapped for a move, and give us a rough idea of how long, so the terms can be written up at your door. Leave the rug on the floor; it is checked and measured right there. If several rugs are going, they can all ride together, each with its own line on the sheet.

Storage and wrapping questions

What people ask before the contractor shows up.

Does the rug have to be washed before you store it?

Yes. We store the rugs we wash, and there is a reason beyond tidiness. Soil in wool is what moth larvae feed on, and a damp spot that goes into a wrapped roll comes out as mildew. A rug that has been washed, rinsed and dried through goes into storage with nothing in it to feed on or to rot, and comes out ready to go straight down on the floor of the new house.

How do I know what storage will cost and how long I can leave the rug?

You will have it in writing before the rug leaves your house. Storage is quoted by the rug, and the terms, including how long you expect to need it and how to reach us when you want it back, are agreed on paper along with the wash. If your plans change, call or text and we update the paperwork before anything else happens.

Can you deliver the rug to my new address when I am ready?

Yes. Tell us the new address when you call for it, and the rug is unrolled where it belongs in the new house. Delivery is free anywhere we pick up, which covers Birmingham, the suburbs over the mountain, the towns down I-65 and out to Tuscaloosa, so a move within the area changes nothing. If the new house is outside the area, tell us up front and you get a plain answer about what we can do.

Why not just roll the rug up and put it in the garage?

Because garages are where rugs go to get ruined. A roll on a concrete floor picks up moisture from underneath, a fold creases the foundation, and a rug that went in with a little soil in it is a buffet for moths. By the time you unroll it a year later there is a smell, a crease that will not lie flat, or a bald patch. Washed, dried through and wrapped, a rug can wait out a long renovation and come back as it went in.

Can I get the rug back early if plans change?

Of course. Call or text and the office schedules the delivery; the rug is already clean and wrapped, so it is a matter of finding a day that suits you. The same goes the other direction: if the contractor runs long, let us know and the rug stays put until you are ready. The paperwork is updated either way.

Do you wrap rugs for a move even if you are not storing them?

Yes. Some people want the rugs washed and wrapped and back on the truck with the furniture, with no storage in between. The rug is washed, dried through, rolled and wrapped for the trip, and delivered back to you before the movers come. Unwrap it at the new house and it goes down clean. Tell us the moving date when you book, so the wash can be planned around it.
