A clean, not a refinish

What we do to a hardwood floor, and what we do not

There are two things people mean by fixing a wood floor. One is refinishing: sanding the boards down and putting a new finish on. That is a different trade, and we do not do it. The other is cleaning: taking off everything that has built up on the finish since the last time it was bare, so the floor you already have looks like itself again. That is what this is.

The build-up is real. Grit tracked in from outside works into the grain and the joints between boards. Floor products leave a thin film every time, and the films stack into a dull haze that holds dust. Along the hallway and in front of the sink the finish goes gray with tread. A mop rearranges all of that. A deep clean lifts it off.

Little water, no film

Low moisture, nothing left on the wood

Wood and water are a bad pair, so the clean uses very little of it. The grit is picked up first, then the finish is worked over with a measured amount of solution that cuts the film and the grime, and it is lifted away before it can sit. Nothing is left behind to dry into a new layer. The floor is dry in about an hour, and what you see is the finish you paid for, with the haze gone.

Nearly all the dullness on a wood floor sits on top of the finish, and a deep clean takes it off. The haze lifts and the grain shows through again. Small scratches stop catching the eye. Whatever a clean can do for a floor, ours does.

A clean leaves a few things as they are: a gouge, a dent, a board the sun has faded, a gap between planks. Finish worn through to bare wood is work for a refinisher, and we say so up front. Everything around them still cleans up well.

What to do before we arrive

Pick the small things up off the floor and tell us which rooms are on the list. Rugs that are being picked up can stay down; they are rolled first, and the floor under them is cleaned with the rest. Furniture that can be moved easily should be, so the whole floor gets done. Keep the dog in another room for the hour the floor takes to dry.

What people ask once they notice the hallway has gone gray.

Is this the same thing as refinishing the floor?

No, and it is important to be clear about that. Refinishing means sanding the wood down and putting a new finish on it, which is a different trade. We clean the floor and the finish that is already on it: the grime in the grain, the film left by months of mopping, the gray tread along the hallway. The floor you have comes back looking like itself again, clean. Nothing is sanded and nothing new is applied.

Will the clean take the scratches out?

No. A scratch is a cut in the finish or the wood, and cleaning does not fill it. What the clean does is take off the dull, dirty film that makes a floor look worse than its scratches, so the surface reads clean and even again and the small marks stop drawing the eye. Deep gouges stay deep gouges, and the technician says so when the price is written.

Why does my floor look dull even right after I mop?

Because mopping moves the film around and leaves a new layer of it. Most floor products leave a little of themselves behind each time, and that build-up holds dust and shows every footprint. Add the grit that works into the grain and the floor looks tired no matter how often you mop. A deep clean takes the build-up and the grit off the finish, which is why the floor looks different the same afternoon.

Can you clean the hardwood under the rug you are picking up?

Yes, and it is the best moment to do it. The rug is rolled for the van, and the pale square it leaves behind is right there to be cleaned with the rest of the room. By the time the rug comes back from the plant, clean, it goes down on a clean floor. Ask when you book and the technician allows the time.

Will the cleaning hurt the finish on my floor?

The clean is made for the finish, not against it. Very little moisture goes onto the wood, nothing is left to sit on it, and nothing in the process strips the finish away. The technician looks at the floor first and tells you plainly if yours is a floor we should not clean, such as bare wood with no finish on it or a finish that is already lifting. On those, cleaning is not the fix.

How soon can we walk on the floor?

In about an hour. The floor is damp rather than wet when the technician finishes, and the air does the rest. Keep the dog and the kids off it for that hour, then walk on it in socks, and put the furniture and the rugs back once it is fully dry.
