Why the plant goes deeper

A rug is washed, not shampooed

Most of what makes a rug look tired is not on the pile. It is grit in the foundation, the woven base under the pile, and it works like sandpaper every time someone walks across. A vacuum takes the top layer, and a cleaning in your home lifts the soil from the pile. At the plant the rug is dusted first, so the grit comes out dry, then washed through, rinsed through and dried through before it is rolled. The colors are tested before any of that happens, the fringe is cleaned on its own, and a pet accident is flushed out of the foundation, not sprayed over. That is the difference between a rug that looks better for a week and a rug that is clean.

What it costs

The size of the rug sets the price. Expect, on average, somewhere around $1 to $2 a square foot whatever the rug is made of, with every booking starting at $99. Repairs, moth treatment and protection are quoted on their own. The measuring happens at your door with you watching, the figure goes on paper, and that figure is the invoice. No surprise at delivery, no add-on you did not ask for.

Step by step

From your door to the plant and back

At your door

The technician unrolls the rug, reads the fiber and the construction, tests the dye, and names any mark that will fade but not vanish. Then comes the tape measure and the price on paper. You say yes before it is rolled.

Dusting

Before any water, the dry soil is shaken out of the foundation. On a rug that has never been washed this is the step that surprises people most.

The wash

Matched to the fiber: wool one way, silk and viscose another, cotton and jute another, synthetics another. Fringe is washed separately so it comes back white, not gray.

Rinse and dry

A full rinse so nothing sticky is left to attract the next round of dirt, then a complete dry before the rug is rolled for the trip home.

Inspection and delivery

A last look at the pile, edges and fringe, then the drive back to your door, usually in 5 to 7 business days. You look it over before you pay.

Oriental and Persian rug cleaning in Birmingham

We pick up hand-knotted and machine-made Oriental and Persian rugs free from homes all over Birmingham, Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills, Homewood and Hoover. We test each dye right on your floor before a price is written, then the rug is dusted, washed cool at our plant with the fringe done on its own, and dried flat all the way through. It is priced by the square foot at the same rate as any other rug, and most come home in 5 to 7 business days.

What we wash, and what each one needs

Wool

Washed cool and rinsed fully so it never felts, then dried flat so it keeps its shape. Most hand-knotted rugs are wool, and they come back softer than they left.

Persian & Oriental

Hand-knotted or machine-made, the dyes are tested first and the fringe is handled on its own. An heirloom is treated as one, from the first look at your door to the last at delivery.

Silk & viscose

Beautiful, and unforgiving of a careless clean. Low water, no scrubbing, and a drying that keeps the sheen and the pile direction.

Cotton, jute & sisal

Plant fibers drink water and brown if they dry slowly, so they are washed lightly and dried on their own schedule.

Synthetics

Polypropylene, nylon and polyester rugs from the family room and the back door. They can take a thorough wash, and they come back looking new.

Cowhide & sheepskin

Hides are cleaned, not washed, with the hair and the backing in mind. Ask about yours at pickup.

Antique & worn

Thin spots, loose edges and old repairs are noted at the door. The wash is gentler and the repair, if you want it, is quoted separately. Repair and restoration

Pickup day

What to expect when the van arrives

You get a text as the technician heads your way. Leave the rug where it lies; it is easier to look at a rug in place than one already rolled, and the furniture on it is moved and put back. The inspection, the measuring and the written price take about fifteen minutes. Several rugs go on one trip, and a pickup can share the visit with carpet or upholstery cleaning in the home.

Delivery works the same way in reverse: a text, the rug unrolled where it belongs, and a minute together to look it over before you pay. Pickups and deliveries run Monday through Saturday, 7 AM to 5 PM.

In your home or at the plant

On the floor or at the plant: which one is yours?

Both, and we do both. A rug that needs a good cleaning where it lies can be done right in your home by Rug Runners, or by our sister company, LocalPro Carpet Cleaning, while the carpet is being cleaned. A rug that is wool, silk or Oriental, that has a pet accident or a smell in it, that has fringe gone gray, or that has never been washed gets the most from the plant: the dusting, the full rinse and the full dry. What people ask on the phone before the first pickup.

How long will my rug be gone?

Usually 5 to 7 business days from pickup to delivery. Repairs, heavy pet treatments and oversized rugs can add days, and the technician says so at pickup if yours will. We do not rush the drying to hit a date; a rug rolled up damp is how smells start.

Does someone have to be there for the pickup?

Someone who can say yes to the written price, since the technician measures the rug and prices it at the door before it leaves. If you can't be there, OK the figure by phone or text ahead of time and tell us where the rolled rug will be waiting. For the delivery, just tell us where to leave it if nobody is home.

How do you know which wash a rug needs?

By looking at it. The technician checks the fiber of the pile and the foundation, tests whether the dyes are stable, and looks at the construction. Wool, silk, cotton, jute, viscose and synthetics each get their own method at the plant, and fringe is always cleaned separately.

What if a stain does not come out?

Most stains do come out, and if anyone can get one out, we can. A few marks are not soil at all, like dye that has already run or a bleach spot, and the technician names those for you on pickup day, before you say yes. Even those usually come back far lighter, and our repair work can often finish the job.

Can you wash a rug that has pet urine in it?

Yes, and that is the most common reason a rug comes to us. Urine salts sit in the foundation of the rug, which is why a surface spray never ends the smell. The wash flushes them out, and pet treatment carries a 100% pet odor removal guarantee on the rugs we treat.

Do you clean rugs in my home?
