Most damage is not the end of a rug

A rug that is unraveling at one end, worn to the foundation by the door, or chewed at a corner looks finished. It usually is not. The foundation of a hand-knotted rug is strong, and the pile sits on it knot by knot, so a repairer can rebuild a spot the way it was first made. Fringe can be secured or renewed, edges rebound, holes patched or rewoven, faded color brought back up, moth damage filled in, and a rug that got wet washed and dried through before rot sets in.

Each of those gets its own quote once the rug has been washed and can be seen clean. The figure is in writing, you say yes or no, and the rug comes home either way.

Why we wash first

A repair is matched to a clean rug

Dirt changes color. A red that reads brown through years of soil will read red again after the wash, and a repair matched to the brown would show forever. Grit also sits in the foundation, and sewing through it grinds the new work from day one. So the rug is washed, rinsed and dried through first, then it goes to the repairer, who sees the true shades, the true thin spots and the places where an old repair is already failing. The quote comes from that look, not from a guess at your door.

What each one involves

Fringe

The fringe is the end of the rug's own foundation. When it frays or wears to stubs, the end is secured so the knots stop walking out, and new fringe can be attached if you want the look back.

Edges, binding and serging

The long sides of a rug are wrapped in a thread binding that takes the vacuum and the foot traffic. When it wears through, it is rewrapped by hand, which keeps the edge from unraveling into the field.

Holes and patches

A missing corner or a hole in the field is patched with a matching piece secured from the back, or rewoven knot by knot where the rug deserves it.

Reweaving

The foundation is rebuilt across the gap and the pile is retied in the original colors. Slow, skilled, and the right call for an heirloom.

Color restoration

A spot bleached pale by sun, by urine or by a cleaner can be brought back toward the surrounding color. The technician tells you honestly how close it can get.

Moth damage

Larvae eat the wool down to the foundation in patches. After the wash, the eaten areas are filled and the rug comes home without the bald spots. Moth and bug treatment deals with the larvae themselves.

Wet rugs

A rug that sat wet is washed through, dried under control and inspected for rot and for dye that has run. The sooner it reaches the plant, the more of it comes back.

Antique and heirloom

Thin pile, old repairs and a brittle foundation are handled as what they are. The wash is gentler, the repair is slower, and nothing is done without your yes.

If a rug can be fixed, we can fix it

Most rug damage can be mended, and on a fine rug the repair disappears into the field. On a coarser weave you may spot it if you look, and we tell you which yours is before you pay for it.

Color restoration brings a faded spot much closer to its neighbors, if not quite back to the day it was woven, and a foundation that has rotted through is rebuilt, a bigger job than a stitch. When a repair would cost more than the rug, you hear that too, and a wash alone often makes it a rug you are glad to keep.

What to tell us when you book

Say what is wrong with the rug when you call or text, and send a photo if you have one, so the technician arrives knowing what to look at. Leave the rug where it is, loose ends and all; do not trim the fringe or tape the edge, since that makes the repair harder. If the rug is wet, say so when you book, because the sooner it is washed and dried the more of it survives.

What people ask when they are not sure a rug can be saved.

Do you wash the rug before you repair it?

Yes. Soil hides the true colors and the true condition of the foundation, so a repair on a dirty rug is matched to the wrong shade and sewn over grit. The wash comes first, the rug is looked over clean, and the repair is quoted from what the repairer can see. Both figures are in writing before any needle touches it.

Can new fringe be put on a rug whose fringe is worn away?

It can. Fringe is the end of the rug's own foundation threads, and when it wears down to stubs the choice is to secure what is left so the rug stops unraveling, or to attach new fringe along the end. The technician shows you how far it has gone at your door, and the price for the fringe work comes after the wash.

The dog chewed a corner off the rug. Can that be patched?

Usually, yes. A missing corner or a hole in the field is rebuilt by patching or by reweaving, depending on the rug. Patching sets a matching piece into the gap and secures it from the back. Reweaving rebuilds the foundation and reties the pile in that spot, so it is slower and costs more, and it is what an heirloom deserves. The repairer looks at the hole after the wash and quotes you one or the other.

Will the repair be priced at my door like the wash?

The wash is. The repair is quoted separately, after the rug has been washed and inspected at the plant, because the repairer needs to see the clean foundation to know how much work is really there. You get that figure in writing before any repair starts, and you can say no to it and still take the clean rug home. Nothing is charged until the rug is home and you have looked it over.

What happens to a rug that got soaked by a leak?

Call or text us as soon as you find it, and leave the rug unrolled where it is so the wet part can breathe until the van arrives. A wet rug left rolled or folded starts to mildew, the dyes can run into each other, and the cotton foundation can begin to rot. At the plant it is washed through, rinsed and dried all the way through under control, which stops the rot and the mildew, and then we tell you plainly what came back and what did not.

Does a repair add to the 5 to 7 business days?

It can, and the technician says so at pickup. The wash runs on its usual schedule; the repair is hand work on top of it, so a fringe job may add a few days and a reweave can add more. You get the time along with the written quote for the repair, and we would sooner give you an honest estimate than a hopeful one.
