What happens to a Calera rug once it leaves
The rugs we collect here are mostly the ones new houses get furnished with: polypropylene and nylon in the bedrooms and hallways, a bigger wool or wool-blend piece anchoring the open living room, and the odd jute runner by the back door. Each one goes through the plant on its own terms.
Before any water touches it, the rug is dusted so the dry grit falls out of the foundation. Then the wash is matched to what it is made of. Synthetics stand up to a vigorous wash and a thorough rinse and come back looking new. Wool is washed cool and laid out flat to dry, so it keeps its size. Jute and the other plant fibers get a lighter wash and their own drying schedule, because they brown if they sit damp. Fringe is done on its own so it comes home white.
After the rinse comes a full dry, and the rug is not rolled until it is dry to the backing. Someone runs a hand over the pile and checks the edges one more time, then it goes on the van for the trip back. Our rug cleaning page walks through each stage in more detail.

Can you pick up a rug from a Calera townhome with no driveway?
Yes. The technician parks on the street or in a visitor spot, comes to your door and does the whole inspection inside: the rug is unrolled where it lies, checked for fiber and dye, measured and priced on paper. Then it is rolled and carried to the van. Nothing about a townhome changes the price or the pickup. If the parking rules on your street are strict, mention it when you book and we plan the stop around them.
We are moving into a new build. Should the rugs be washed before we lay them?
That is one of the best times to do it. Rugs that came out of a storage unit, a moving truck or the previous house carry dust and sometimes a smell you only notice once the room is quiet. Book the pickup from the address where the rugs are now, tell us the new address in Calera, and we deliver them there clean, dry and rolled, ready to go down on the new floor.
Our open-plan living room rug in Camden Cove is huge. Can one technician get it out the door?
Yes. Big rugs are what the van is for. The technician moves the furniture off it, rolls it tight and carries it out, and a very heavy rug gets a second pair of hands. At the plant an oversized rug can need a longer drying time, and if yours will take more than the usual 5 to 7 business days we tell you that at pickup, before you decide.
Our toddler plays on the bedroom rug. Is the wash safe for her?
Yes. The rug is washed with solutions that are safe around kids and pets, rinsed until the water coming off it is clean, and dried right through before it is rolled up, so nothing is left behind for small hands to pick up and no damp spot is hiding underneath. The dusting that comes first takes out the dry grit a crawling child would otherwise be face down in. It can go straight back on the floor the minute it is delivered.
Our patio rug by the pool has gone green. Can it be washed?
Yes. Most patio rugs are polypropylene, a synthetic that stands up to a thorough wash and a strong rinse, so the green film, the grit and the mildew smell come out and the colors come back up. Bring it in from the deck the day before so it is dry enough to roll, or leave it where it is and the technician will handle it. It is inspected, measured and priced at your door like any other rug.
